Marina bay is one of those long term projects that started back in the
1980s that Singapore is so good at, when land was reclaimed from the
sea to create a bay at the mouths of the Singapore and Kallang Rivers.
A barrage at the mouth has turned it into a freshwater catchement area.
Development on the reclaimed land includes a Casino Hotel and of course
being Singapore, another shopping mall. Under construction and awaiting
completion by 2012 is the Garden On The Bay. Included in the garden are
two climate controlled greenhouses to house plants from around the
world. Also on the skyline are the ArtScience Museum and the Theatres
On The Bay fondly nicknamed The Durian. This is a far cry from the
foetid overburdened Singapore River I remember from the 1950s that was
so polluted you could probably have walked across the top of it.
